Description
When this photograph was created, a storm could be seen brewing in the Northeast while the sun still shone brightly under the dark clouds. The brightness of the rock and cliffs was in sharp contrast to the dark, forbidding sky.
This overlook is located in Angra do Heroismo, just East of Monte Brasil on Terceira Island. The area atop the far cliff is a popular place to look for whales during the summer months, but they are rarely seen in the winter.
Terceira is the 3rd largest of the 9 islands that make up The Azores of Portugal. The Azores were discovered in the late 1400's and Angra do Heroismo, the largest city on the island, was established shortly after. The location in the Atlantic Ocean made the Azores very important for ships crossing the Atlantic. Today, there are still two military bases on the small island: Monte Brasil, which was established by the Portuguese in the 1400's and is still active today, and a small American base which houses the region's only international airport.
