Description
After spotting this old building falling into ruin in the middle of Angra do Heroismo, my son was fascinated with it. When this photograph was created, we were at the top of Angra Garden, enjoying the views of the city. He spotted the old building far away to the East and asked to borrow my camera so that he could get a better look through the zoom lens. He zoomed in and showed it to me, and I in turn took the photograph.
Later, while strolling through the city in the general vicinity, he insisted we look for it, so we spotted it on a steep side street.
In 1980, Terceira Island suffered a major Earthquake that damaged or destroyed many of the historic buildings on the island. Much was restored and the historic buildings that line the streets were preserved and most of them still stand today, but throughout the island, you can find the occasional structure like this, that was too damaged to repair, but for whatever reason, was not torn down to be rebuilt.
After the earthquake, the city was rebuilt in keeping with the traditional architecture, so aside from looking for the plaques that explain the earthquake damage, it is sometimes difficult to tell the new from the old. It is my understanding that, while the damages were immense, most of the original structures are still in tact in some way or another.
