Description
Hagood Mill Historic Site and Folk Life Center stands in Pickens County South Carolina and is home to the historic Hagood Gristmill. The Gristmill was originally built in about 1825, but was rebuilt at the current location in 1845. Today, it is registered on the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of the oldest gristmills still in operation, and is unique in that its waterwheel is the largest water wheel in the state at 20ft in diameter, and the only waterwheel in South Carolina made with wood.
Also located within the Hagood Mill Historic Site and Folk Life Center are a traditional barn, 2 historic log cabins from 1791 and 1925, a visitors center with a small gift shop, blacksmith building, cotton gin, moonshine still, and large, rustically styled outdoor stage frequently used for 3rd Saturday events. There is a short and very easy trail walk around the property that winds through the forest along Hagood Creek where you can see a wide variety of local plant life and animals.
You can visit Hagood Creek Historic Site and Folk Life Center on the 3rd Saturday of every month to enjoy various events, see the gristmill in operation, and purchase grains made in the gristmill.
Hagood Mill Historic Site is also home to the nations largest collection of petroglyphs located in one place. To see them, enter the museum at the back of the property and enjoy a short, informative recorded show with lights over the rocks.
