Description
In this photograph of the Terceira coast, you can see both the lighthouse of Ponta das Contendas and the Ilheus de Cabras.
The Ponta das Contendas lighthouse was built in 1934, and is still active today. Due to the rocky terrain both above and below the Atlantic Ocean in the area of the Azores, Lighthouses are rather important.
The islet you see in the background, just off the coast of Terceira, is called the Ilheus de Cortas, which translates to "Islets of Goats" in English. It is actually a duel islet made up of 2 small islets that look like they were split apart. They were not actually split apart, but are part of the rim of a stratovolcano under the ocean. The name comes from the idea that shepherds used the islets to forage for sheep and goats during the time Terceira was first being settled. Today, the islets are privately owned, but remain uninhabited.
