Description
This photograph depicts the view from the spire at the top of Angra Garden, looking out over the city of Angra do Heroismo, on to Angra Bay, and Monte Brasil.
Angra do Heroismo is the largest urban center on the island of Terceira. Terceira is the 3rd largest of the 9 islands that make up The Azores. The Azores are an independent republic of Portugal.
Terceira was discovered in the mid 1400's and became an important port for ships crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Today, Angra do Heroismo is recognized as a World Heritage City by UNESCO. Both the Port and the Fort on Monte Brasil remain active today. The port serves both civilian and military vessels, and the fort is still an active Portuguese Military base.
The architecture in Angra do Heroismo stays very true to the historic roots of the island. As you can see, the cathedrals tower above all of the other buildings in the town. The exterior of the buildings are all similar in style with simple lines and red tile roofs, but the interiors of the cathedrals are all very ornate. The doors are also very ornate.
