Saluda River in South Carolina. The Saluda River begins between the borders of Greenville and Pickens counties in South Carolina. It continues to flow southeast along through the Piedmont region along the boundaries of Pickens, Greenville, Anderson, Abbeville, Laurens, Greenwood, Newberry, Lexington and Richland Counties, past the towns of Piedmont, West Pelzer, Pelzer, Ware Shoals and West Columbia. It joins the Broad River in Columbia to form the Congaree River. (Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saluda_River)
The Poinsett Bridge was named for Joel Poinsett. It was built in 1820 as part of a road connecting Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, to Saluda Mountain in North Carolina. The bridge includes a beautifully designed Gothic Arch and stretches 130 feet over Little Gap Creek. It is believed to be designed by Robert Mills, the same architect that designed the Washington Monument. The Poinsett Bridge was named to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1970.
