Description
When this photograph was created, a storm was brewing to the northeast while the sun continued to shine below the dark clouds creating a contrast that was both ominous and breathtakingly beautiful. The conflict in the sky, between the bright sun and the dark clouds, was mirrored on the earth by the strong cliffs rising up out of the turbulent ocean.
The area atop the far cliff is a popular whale watching place during the summer, but this photograph was created in the winter time. I made this photograph at an overlook just East of Monte Brasil, located in the city of Angra do Heroismo on Terceira Island. Terceira is the 3rd largest, and 3rd discovered island of The Azores region of Portugal. The Azores sit about 900 miles off the coast of Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean, which made them a very important asset to ships crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The Azores were discovered in the mid 1400's, and Monte Brasil, a military fort that is still active today, was established almost immediately.
It is an incredibly beautiful island, and I encourage everyone to make the trip to this remote little island at some point.
