Description
This is a photograph of the coast of Terceira Island in the Azores. As you can see, the coast of Terceira is very rocky and steep. The pastures go right up to the edges of the cliffs.
Terceira is the 3rd largest of the 9 islands that make up the Azores region of Portugal. It was formed from volcanic activity along the Terceira Rift. Terceira itself is made up of 4 stratovolcano which overlap. They create the rocky, hilly terrain topped with very shallow but fertile soil which is perfect for grazing cattle. On Terceira, it is said that there are at least 2 cows for every person living on the island!
All of Terceira's urban centers and cities are located along the coast while the interior of the small island is dedicated to a few nature reserves and, of course, more cattle pastures.
