I no longer know what kind of rose this is. When I photographed the roses, in the Angra Garden in Angra do Heroismo, each rosebush had a placard that denoted both the latin name and the common name. I carefully noted each flower, but somehow the notes ended up jumbled and when I returned home I could no longer make any sense of them.
Anyway, I like this flower, it is one of my favorites from the garden. The color reminded me of the soft glow of summer sunrises and sunsets, so much more subtle in their beauty than the vibrant sunrises and sunsets of winter.
I photographed this rose in December, but it brought summer to my mind. I loved the contrast between the delicate yellow orange petals and the vibrant green behind them. The petals almost seemed to glow with a soft warmth, as though some ethereal heart beat within them.
Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school.
