About Kelly Hazel
Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school. This school has grown since then into a year round boarding school that focuses on the Arts. It is truly an amazing program and I count myself blessed to...

The monochrome really works well with this image of the old house. Excellent!!

While I am not a big fan of photographs of old houses, barns and such, I am very pleased when I see one that relies on presenting exceptional tonal values and not relying on the "fancy" tricks that the "digital darkroom" now offers. Viewing this photograph I am reminded of the days of black & white film photography when a selenium toner might be used here, and the vignetting was done through the process known as "dodging". Very well done, Kelly.
Kelly Hazel replied:
Thank you very much, Walter! I learned in a darkroom originally, and while digital was already taking over before I finished school, I was late to switch over from film. I still shoot film and work in a rented darkroom occasionally. While I love the infinite possibilities digital images offer, I still tend to limit even my digital altering to techniques that can be accomplished in the darkroom.
