Description
This photograph looks out over the city of Angra do Heroismo and onto Monte Brasil and the Atlantic Ocean. Angra do Heroismo and Monte Brasil are located on the island of Terceira, the 3rd largest of the 9 islands that make up The Azores, an independent republic of Portugal. The Azores lie about 900 miles off the coast, in the Atlantic ocean.
Monte Brasil is the small "mountain" you see just outside the city. It is actually a peninsula, and was formed by one of several volcanic tufts that make up the island of Terceira. Monte Brasil is encompassed by the walls of Fortress de Sao Joao Baptista, also known as the Fort of Monte Brasil. Today, the fortress still serves as an active Portuguese military base, a testament to the strong architectural design and foundations.
The city of Angra do Heroismo is the largest urban center on the island, and is home not only to the military base, but also one of only 2 port harbors on Terceira. In 1983, Angra do Heroismo was designated a World Heritage City, so the architectural style and many original buildings have been preserved. The streets and sidewalks are paved with hand chipped stones hammered into place one by one. The sidewalks are adorned with beautiful stone mosaic patterns--my son was especially impressed by this beautiful work. The buildings are mostly white stone with red tile roofs, and as you can see in the photograph, the churches are of great importance, and are by far the tallest buildings in the city. In addition to the grand cathedrals, small chapels are located throughout the city and the entire island of Terceira. In these small chapels, there is only an alter for the priests, and speaks from inside to the congregations gathered outside. As I understand, these smaller chapels are only used for special feast days, but I may be wrong.
In this photograph, you can see 2 very prominent churches:
The most prominent, the large yellow and white cathedral in the center of the city is known as Se Cathedral, or the Cathedral of Angra do Heroismo. The cathedral remotes to the primitive church started by Álvaro Martins Homem in 1461, who dedicated it to São Salvador.
The smaller blue and white cathedral just off the coast (on the left side of the image where the water meets the land) is Igreja da Misericordia. Igreja da Misercordia is the most modern church on Terceira and was built between 1728 and 1746.
