Description
The Azores Islands are made up of 9 islands that sit about 900 miles out in the Atlantic Ocean. Today, they are an independent republic of Portugal. The city of Angra do Heroismo is located on Terceira Island, which was the 3rd island to be discovered, and the 3rd largest of the nine islands. Angra do Heroismo is home to one of only 2 port harbors on the island, and is the largest urban area on the island of Terceira. In 1983, the city was declared a World Heritage City, and its historic past is well preserved.
Off the coast, you can see the famous "Split Rock" of Terceira. The interior walls of these two islets (which used to be one) plummet vertically into the Atlantic Ocean. Though there is no development on the islets, in the summer, you can take a boat out to them and swim in the waters around them for a closer look.
The island of Terceira is made up from volcanic activity, and both the islets and Monte Brasil (from which this photograph was taken) were created by additional volcanic activity.
