Description
At Christmas, I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira. Terceira is the 3rd discovered and 3rd largest of the 9 islands that make up The Açores (or Azores) region of Portugal. The islands sit about 1/3 of the way across the Atlantic Ocean when traveling from Portugal to North America. It was discovered in the late 1400's and was an important stop over for ships crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Today, it is still an important port, and the military fort built in the 1400's is still an active Portuguese military base! In addition, there is a very small American military base on the Eastern coast of the island, which is also home to the region's only international airport.
Words cannot describe the beauty of this region!! The buildings in the city of Angra do Heroismo are traditional stone with colorful trim, ornate doors, and red tile roofs. The churches tower above all other buildings, and the streets and sidewalks are made with chipped stone laid into detailed patterns.
The water is a crystal blue sapphire color, and the sea is constantly battering the black, rocky coast. Terceira is a volcanic island, and you can see lava rock all along the coast.
This view is across the bay where the harbor and port are located. The port has been in this location since the island was first inhabited.
