Description
While in Angra do Heroismo, I was intrigued by the beautiful doorways. While the buildings were rather plain, the doors were always rather ornate. The doors, usually made of thick slabs of rich, warmly colored wood, and adorned with small windows, carvings, intricate brass or iron work, stood in sharp contrast to the plain, unadorned buildings. The doors were both welcoming and forbidding at once, as if to say, if you are good you are welcome, but only the good, and the bad will be kept at bay.
I made photographs of several of the doors which I hope to edit and upload soon, so keep an eye out for them.
This particular door was rather plain, but also very beautiful in it's simplicity. It had no windows or decoration save the above knob and lock, but the heavily textured wood stood beautifully against the white walls and purple trim. In Angra do Heroismo, and on most of Terceira Island, the doorknobs are shaped so that they also serve as the knocker. What appears to be only a knocker above the iron plate on this door, will actually turn to open the door. It took me several days to figure this out, so for the better part of the first week, I wandered along the streets wondering how one goes in and out of the doors without knobs.
