Description
Florida Southern College in Lakeland FL boasts the largest on-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright designed buildings in the world, which Wright affectionately named his “Child of the Son” campus. The campus was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2012.
Wright first partnered with Florida Southern College in 1938. He designed 18 structures to complete is vision of the “college of tomorrow.” Unfortunately, as of 1958, only 12 of the structures were completed. In 2013, the Usonian became the 13th Wright structure to be built at FSC. The Usonian house was built according to Wrights original plans from 1930 and is currently the only location where this plan has ever been built.
The following is a list of all of the Frank Lloyd Wright Structures on the Campus
• Annie Pfeiffer Chapel – This is the first completed Frank Lloyd Wright building.
• Buckner Building (originally the Roux Library)
• Ordway Building
• Danforth Chapel
• Polk County Science Building
• Watson Fine Building
• Water Dome
• Three Seminars or The L A Raulerson Building
• The Esplanades
• Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center, Usonian House
This image of the outdoor loggia portrays much of the essence of the design ideas that made Wright famous. The ceilings are very low, with geometric cut outs allowing for beautiful play of light within the loggia.
