Description
The Table Rock Trail at Table Rock State Park in Pickens county, South Carolina has long been one of my favorite trails to run. The trail ascends more than 2500 feet over a 3.6 mile hike. At the top, you are rewarded with a beautiful view spanning several counties, lakes, and nearby mountains. Plant life on Table Rock has always fascinated me--so many plants, both delicate and hardy, growing from the hardness of the rock. With each changing season, hikers are rewarded with changing views, plant life, and even animals.
Table Rock was given its name by early Native Americans who believed that the flat, rocky mountain was used by a giant God as his table, and a smaller, nearby mountain as his stool. Thus, they named the two mountains Table Rock, and Stool Mountain, respectively. When white settlers took the land, they kept the meaning of the original names, but translated them to English.
