Description
This is the entrance to the Fortress of Sao Joao Baptista, also sometimes known as the Fort of Monte Brasil. Monte Brasil is a peninsula formed by a volcano that juts off the coast of Terceira Island and forms the bay which harbors the Port of Angra do Heroismo.
The fortress was built in the 1500's, but was gradually expanded throughout the history of the island. Much of the work was done by local stone masons and blacksmiths, but also by prisoners who would be confined to the gallows, and soldiers who were being punished.
Because of their location in the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores Islands were a very valuable asset because they provided a stopping place for ships crossing the Atlantic, however they were also very vulnerable to attack so military defense was of great importance.
The stone walls ripple around the coast of Monte Brasil encompassing a full 3km squared.
Because the fort continues to function as an active military base today, civilians are not permitted to roam within the walls, but soldiers provide guided tours at specified times, and much of the outdoor premises remains open to the public all day. The ancient stone walls stand in sharp contrast to the modern anti-aircraft guns perched atop strategic hills and bastions.
Access to this entrance requires a rather strenuous walk up the hillside from the western tip of Angra do Heroismo. This bridge crosses high above an intriguing sort of "Dry Moat" that I have not been able to learn much about. The door at the end towers more than 20 feet overhead, and is reminiscent of ancient castle entrances.
