Description
"It is never too late to be what you might have been" - George Eliot.
George Eliot was actually only a pen name. The author's true name was Mary Ann Evans. While female authors were published under their own names during Evans's lifetime, she used the male pen name to ensure that her works would be taken seriously and to protect the privacy of her personal life.
Mary Ann Evans published seven novels under the name George Eliot: Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Romola, Felix Holt: The Radical, Middlemarch, and Daniel Deronda. She also authored many poems, manuscripts, articles, and translations using the name George Eliot.
