I took this photograph just as the sun was setting for the day. The oblique lighting highlights the vibrant green grass that is characteristic of the pastures of Terceira. On Terceira, the landscape forces most of the cities and towns along the coast, and the interior of the island is almost entirely dedicated to nature reserves and cattle pastures.
This is a cattle pasture, though no cows are present at the moment. Cattle is the basis of the Terceira economy and it is said that there are at least 2 cows for every human on Terceira.

Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school.
