Description
Ilheus del Cabras is the largest of the islets in the Azores. It is actually a dual islet, with the smaller side named Ilheu Pequina (small islet) and the larger named Ilheu Grande (big islet) but most people refer to it as a single formation, Ilheus del Cabras, or islets of Goats.
Though the islet is uninhabited, it was once used by shepherds during the early settlement of the Azores to forage goats. Not sure if that is actually true though....
There is also a legend about a young man from Faial Island (also of the Azores) who was banished there for seven years.
There is a long, and rather complicated history of ownership of the islets. Today, they are still uninhabited, but remain private property owned by the family of Jose Luis Evangelho. During the summer months, boating tours will often take people out to swim in the waters around the islets.
This photograph was taken from somewhere on Monte Brasil, based on the shoreline at the bottom of the photograph, but I can't seem to remember exactly where I stopped to take it. I like the composition--the islets framed up by the trees in the foreground. It was not a planned picture, but a scene I just happened upon that day and decided impulsively to create.
