Description
This image depicts Jones Gap Falls, which are located just a short distance off the Jones Gap Trail. Jones Gap Trail was originally created by Solomon Jones in the mid 1800's to connect farmers an other travelers to Greenville, SC. Solomon Jones had no formal training, so legend has it that he blazed the trail with a hatched. By 1910, the toll road was mostly abandoned, but motor vehicles would still occasionally use it. In the 1950's Henry Ware and his cousin E. Ervin Dargan purchased much of the land now designated as Jones Gap State Park and donated it to the State of South Carolina for use as a park. Today, Jones Gap State Park encompasses more than 3,000 acres and is home to 3 waterfalls, including Rainbow Falls, Jones Gap Falls, and Hidden Falls.
Jones Gap Trail is also part of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area that connects Caesars Head State Park to Jones Gap State Park. The Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area contains miles of trails, and a suspension bridge across the top of Raven Cliff Falls.
