This photograph was made looking out over Lake Huron from the rocky coastal area in front of the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse.
Presque Isle is a small township in northern Michigan which boasts a small harbor and two lighthouses. The old lighthouse was built in 1840 from both stone and brick, but the harsh weather on the coast of Lake Huron deteriorated the structure very quickly and in 1890 a new lighthouse was built further inland. The Old Lighthouse is now a museum housed with furniture and tools that tell a visual story of what life at the Lighthouse was like when it was operational.
Lake Huron is the second largest of the 5 lakes that make up the Great Lakes of North America by surface area, and the 3rd largest fresh water lake in the entire world. It is bordered on the West by the US state of Michigan, and on the East by the Canadian provence of Ontario. Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school.
