Description
I snapped this photograph of my husband coming through a tight tunnel in Gruta do Natal because he is such a big man and I wanted to remember his tight fit, but I really love the way the light is playing around him.
Gruta do Natal, or The Christmas Cave, is actually a lava tube that is no longer active. The passage ways are long and both narrow and short, so my big husband had quite the time keeping up. The Cave is one of 2 caves on Terceira that are open to the public, and belongs to the Protected Area of Santa Barbara or Misterios Negros.
Though my family and I enjoy exploring caves in the United States, there are not lava tubes there, so this was our first experience in a lava tube. While the rocks that make up the walls are not as colorful or varied as those of regular caves, the textures are truly fascinating. Throughout the tube, you can see places where the lava flowed very quickly, or rather slowly, and places where the surrounding rock actually "stretched" from the heat and pull.
