Description
Terceira Island is made up of four overlapping Stratovolcanos. This photograph was made at an overlook at Serra do Cume, which is along the rim of the largest of the volcanos. Serra do Come is located in the interior of the Eastern half of the island of Terceira, Roughly half way between Praia da Vitoria and Angra do Heroismo.
The land inside the dome is relatively flat in comparison to the extremely hilly landscapes on the rest of the island, and is used primarily for cattle. According to locals, the walls that you see dividing the small farm fields are made with volcanic rock, cleared from the fields to make room for grass and cattle to grow freely, many, many years ago. Today, the walls are still standing, and are very interesting to look at. While they run in almost perfectly straight lines, the tops are very irregular, and there is no mud or mortar in between the stones to keep them together. Instead, the rough surface of the rocks create enough friction that they do not move easily.
The Island of Terceira is the 3rd largest of the 9 Azores Islands, and measures just shy of 400 square kilometers. The human population of the Island is about 56,000, and locals told me that there are at least 2 cows for every human on the Island! It is very common, when driving through the rural streets of the interior of the island to come across cattle crossing or being moved. The roads are very narrow, so most of the time, you simply have to drive behind the cattle until they can move aside, or if they are coming your direction, pull over and allow them to pass single file.
The island of Terceira is a magnificently beautiful place, both along the coast, and in the interior.
