Terceira Island is made up of four overlapping Stratovolcanos. This photograph was made at an overlook at Serra do Cume, which is along the rim of the largest of the volcanos. Serra do Come is located in the interior of the Eastern half of the island of Terceira, Roughly half way between Praia da Vitoria and Angra do Heroismo.
The land inside the dome is relatively flat in comparison to the extremely hilly landscapes on the rest of the island, and is used primarily for cattle. According to locals, the walls that you see dividing the small farm fields are made with volcanic rock, cleared from the fields to make room for grass and cattle to grow freely, many, many years ago. Today, the walls are still standing, and are very interesting to look at. While they run in almost perfectly straight lines, the tops are very irregular, and there is no mud or mortar in between the stones to keep them together. Instead, the rough surface of the rocks create enough friction that they do not move...
Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school.
