Description
This is the view those who visit Terceira Island by boat are greeted with upon their arrival. The Igreja da Misericordia, or The Church of the Misericordia dominates the skyline and is framed by the boats lined up in the harbor. Once you travel closer, into the harbor, a tall fountain framed by two stone staircases and topped with large porticos emerge below the church. These are the famous "Gateway to Angra do Heroismo"
Terceira Island was discovered in the mid 1400's and the city of Angra do Heroismo and military fort Monte Brasil were established shortly after. The location of The Azores islands in the Atlantic Ocean made them an important stopping post for ships crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Today, both the harbor and the military base are still active.
Most of the city buildings and streets are original to the settlement and are a testament to a well designed city.
The dominant religion of The Azores Islands is Catholic, and the churches are always very dominant structures that tower over the surrounding buildings. The Igreja da Misericordia was built between 1728 and 1746, and is the most modern church on the Island. The bright blue trim provides a stark contrast to the red tile roofs and white warm yellow and white stuccoed buildings surrounding it. Stepping inside the church is like stepping into a whole other world. In sharp contrast to the rather plain, geometric exterior, the interior of the church is filled with extremely ornate chapels, statues, and other artwork.
