Description
Rainbow Falls is located in Jones Gap State Park in Upstate South Carolina. The park is part of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area that connects Jones Gap State Park to Caesars Head State Park through a network of beautiful and well maintained trails.
The Jones Gap Trail was originally built by Solomon Jones and used as a toll road which ran along the Middle Saluda River, connecting Upstate Mountain areas to Greenville South Carolina to create a much shorter route for travelers wishing to buy and sell goods at the Markets in Greenville. Though he had no formal education in civil engineering, transportation, or construction, he and his wife successfully ran the toll roads until their deaths.
As the automobile became more popular and affordable, the road was gradually abandoned in favor of the longer, but smoother roads around the mountain because it was too rough for most cars to traverse.
The Rainbow Falls Trail forks off from the Jones Gap Trail about a mile from the trailhead in Jones Gap State Park to follow Cox Cap Creek for a little while. The Rainbow Falls Trail leads hikers up nearly 1000ft in elevation over the course of about 2 miles, where they are rewarded for their efforts with a stunning view of the falls.
Rainbow Falls plummet 80 to 100 feet into a deep rocky alcove, which combined with the enormous amount of mist created from the impact, cause temperatures at the base of the falls to feel 10 to 20 degrees cooler than temperatures along the hike up to the falls. The man in this photograph is enjoying the cool mist hitting his skin after the steep hike up the mountain!
