As I've noted in descriptions on other photographs, I was intrigued by the beautiful doors of Terceira Island. This door is very plain, yet lovely in its simplicity. The heavy hardware and thick wooden slats are welcoming, and assure safety to those whom it protects. The vibrant red brightens and warms the cold stone that surrounds this door.
I photographed this door in the wine museum of Biscoitos on Terceira Island in the Azores region of Portugal. Biscoitos is the largest wine making city on the island, and they are very proud of their wine. The wine tastes unlike the wines I have ever enjoyed before--they are VERY sweet, and almost syrupy!
Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school.
