This is the entrance to the Fortress of Sao Joao Baptista, also sometimes known as the Fort of Monte Brasil. Monte Brasil is a peninsula formed by a volcano that juts off the coast of Terceira Island and forms the bay which harbors the Port of Angra do Heroismo.
The fortress was built in the 1500's, but was gradually expanded throughout the history of the island. Much of the work was done by local stone masons and blacksmiths, but also by prisoners who would be confined to the gallows, and soldiers who were being punished.
Because of their location in the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores Islands were a very valuable asset because they provided a stopping place for ships crossing the Atlantic, however they were also very vulnerable to attack so military defense was of great importance.
The stone walls ripple around the coast of Monte Brasil encompassing a full 3km squared.
Because the fort continues to function as an active military base today, civilians are not permitted...
Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school.
