Description
This photograph was created at Musgrove Mill State Historic Site in Clinton South Carolina. An easy one mile loop runs past the lake, then back up along the Enoree River to the Musgrove Mill Historic Visitors Center.
Though the original house is no longer standing, some of the materials were salvaged and featured in the new visitors center, which is built in the same style, only a few feet from where the original house stood. Only the steps and part of the foundation remain from the original Musgrove Home.
Musgrove Mill would have been an essential asset during the Revolutionary War due to its close proximity to a river ford, and the grain mill on site. The Bloody Battle of Musgrove Mill took place here in August of 1780, when a small group of vastly outnumbered Patriots managed to outlast a large Loyalist Militia that more than tripled them in numbers. Unfortunately, due to urgent situations elsewhere, both the Patriots and the Loyalists where forced to retreat and neither side took control of the property. Much blood lost for nothing.....like most wars.
This is a beautiful place, with a sad history.
