Description
The main subject in the foreground of this photograph is an old, stone building, most likely abandoned or relegated for use as storage. Beyond, you can see the beautiful and bustling city of Angra do Heroismo. Further, beyond the city are rich, peaceful pastures rising up to the rim of the volcano. Terceira is actually made up of four stratovolcanos which overlap one another.
The city of Angra do Heroismo is the largest and oldest urban center on Terceira, and is home to the government seat and judicial system for the Azores. It was established in the mid 1400's and is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage City.
In 1980, the island suffered a very severe earthquake which damaged much of the original architecture on the island. Most of the buildings were rebuilt or repaired in keeping with their original architecture. Unfortunately, some buildings are left in their damaged state as a reminder of the tragic event.
