Hi Stacy, I have a little bit. From what I understand, the gated door used to provide access to the underground tunnels of the sewer system. The site was also a pre-civil war rock quarry, so it could have had something to do with that, though mostly what I've heard was sewer access. I don't think it actually accesses anything anymore, but it remains locked, so I'm not sure, and nothing I've found thus far on the actual door has been truly "reliable" information. The surrounding Arboretum was created in 1932 by the Greenville Garden Club. The name of the waterfall just outside this picture is Arboretum Falls, named after the Arboretum, but the stream, which originates from a spring under Spring St. remains unnamed. I am still researching when I have time--I would love to know the mystery behind this door.

Hello Kelly!!! I have been trying to hunt down information on exactly what this is in Falls Park. Do you have any historical information on this????

Kelly Hazel replied:

I also have a few links to some historic papers that were published about the planning of our city back in the early 1900's. They didn't provide much on the door, but it was still interesting to see what our city planners were thinking about back then. If you'd like them, I'll send them to you.

Artist's Description

In a back corner of the beautiful Falls Park in Greenville, South Carolina stands the remnents of a beautiful garden created in the early 1930's as part of a "Beautification Project." The garden won national recognition in Better Homes and Gardens magazine, but fell into disrepair during WWII as no one was available to care for it. Many parts of the garden have been restored as part of Falls Park, which stands around Reedy River Falls.

About Kelly Hazel

Kelly Hazel

Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school. This school has grown since then into a year round boarding school that focuses on the Arts. It is truly an amazing program and I count myself blessed to...
