At Christmas, I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Angra do Hero�smo on Terceira. Terceira is the 3rd discovered and 3rd largest of the 9 islands that make up The A�ores (or Azores) region of Portugal. The islands sit about 1/3 of the way across the Atlantic Ocean when traveling from Portugal to North America. It was discovered in the late 1400's and was an important stop over for ships crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Today, it is still an important port, and the military fort built in the 1400's is still an active Portuguese military base! In addition, there is a very small American military base on the Eastern coast of the island, which is also home to the region's only international airport.
Words cannot describe the beauty of this region!! The buildings in the city of Angra do Heroismo are traditional stone with colorful trim, ornate doors, and red tile roofs. The churches tower above all other buildings, and the streets and sidewalks are made with chipped stone...
Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school.
