This photograph was taken on the Western side of Angra do Heroismo, looking Eastward across Cais da Silveira toward Monte Brasil on Terceira Island.
Terceira is the 3rd largest, and 3rd discovered of the 9 islands that make up the Azores of Portugal, thus it's name, Terceira, from the word Terce or Three in Portuguese.
Monte Brasil is a small peninsula that juts off the southern coast of Terceira, just beside Angra do Heroismo, forming Angra bay. It looks like two small mountains, but it is actually the product of a volcanic offshoot from one of the stratovolcano that formed Terceira. The peaks are actually the remnants of the rim of a large volcanic caldera.
Today, Monte Brasil is encircled by the walls of the Forte of Monte Brasil, which were built throughout the 1500's and 1600's, and it remains an active Portuguese military base protecting the island today. Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school.
