While walking through Angra Garden in Angra do Heroismo, my 12 year old son spied this tiny clump of moss with even tinier sprigs of some plant poking up from the moss. Tiny drops of water clung to the small leaves and almost sparkled in the morning sunshine.
Too busy admiring the large, exotic plants featured along the path of the garden, I never would have noticed the beautiful little scene had my son not pointed it out to me.
This is why I love to travel with my son, love to hike with him, and love to explore new places with him. He sees beauty in the smallest details that, as an adult focused on always moving forward, always making progress, I have accidentally trained myself to overlook. This year, I am focused on allowing my son to "retrain" my mind to look all around, see the beauty in the small things that do not stare us right in the eye, and take the time to see the beauty in things both small and grand.

Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school.
