In this photograph of the Terceira coast, you can see both the lighthouse of Ponta das Contendas and the Ilheus de Cabras.
The Ponta das Contendas lighthouse was built in 1934, and is still active today. Due to the rocky terrain both above and below the Atlantic Ocean in the area of the Azores, Lighthouses are rather important.
The islet you see in the background, just off the coast of Terceira, is called the Ilheus de Cortas, which translates to "Islets of Goats" in English. It is actually a duel islet made up of 2 small islets that look like they were split apart. They were not actually split apart, but are part of the rim of a stratovolcano under the ocean. The name comes from the idea that shepherds used the islets to forage for sheep and goats during the time Terceira was first being settled. Today, the islets are privately owned, but remain uninhabited.
Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school.
