Where I live, roses only begin to bloom in March. I suppose the warm winters in the Azores allow for a longer blooming season for the roses on Terceira. The garden was full of beautiful roses in various stages of blooming from buds like this one, to flowers in full bloom, and even a few who were dropping their petals, nearing the end of their time of full beauty. Where I live, the blooming season is so short that most rosebushes only bloom once: The rosebushes all have only buds, then only flowers, then the blooms all begin to drop their petals at the same time.
The variance in the stages of bloom shown in this garden reminded me of the different stages of life people find themselves in. Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school.
