The remnants of this tree, a marker of life long past, has stood, dead, at the top of Table Rock for as long as I have been running to the top of the mountain. It stands a little ways off the trail, but you can easily visit without getting lost or putting yourself in too much danger of falling as long as you are careful.
In the springtime, when this image was created, life is blooming all around the dead tree and the contrast is striking and almost startling. I never knew the tree when it lived; I've only known its lifeless marker, but I love the tree. Its life was important, and it lives on with importance. One day, I know the wind will be too much, and it will tear the ruins of this tree from the stone, and then the tree will truly be dead, but until then, I will love this tree.
Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school.
