Description
Musgrove Mill State Historic Site marks the location of the Battle of Musgrove Mill, which took place on August 19th, 1780, during the Revolutionary War. It is located in Clinton South Carolina and run by the South Carolina State Park Service.
Musgrove Mill was important to both the Patriots and the Loyalists because the gristmill could provide grains and a large river ford on the property would facilitate transportation and trade routes.
Horseshoe Falls is located on the Musgrove Mill properties, only a short stroll from the parking area. The Falls mark the beginning of a self guided interpretive trail that walks hikers through the path of the Patriot Militia to the Battle Field of Musgrove Mill.
The striking beauty of Horseshoe Falls is a sharp contrast to the bloody battle that took place here more than 200 years ago. The falls are defined by a shallow stream that spills over the rocks into a sandy bottomed pool about 3 feet deep. Though swimming is not condoned (no lifeguard is on duty), it is not forbidden either, and the safe conditions have made this spot a popular swimming hole for locals.
