The main subject in the foreground of this photograph is an old, stone building, most likely abandoned or relegated for use as storage. Beyond, you can see the beautiful and bustling city of Angra do Heroismo. Further, beyond the city are rich, peaceful pastures rising up to the rim of the volcano. Terceira is actually made up of four stratovolcanos which overlap one another.
The city of Angra do Heroismo is the largest and oldest urban center on Terceira, and is home to the government seat and judicial system for the Azores. It was established in the mid 1400's and is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage City.
In 1980, the island suffered a very severe earthquake which damaged much of the original architecture on the island. Most of the buildings were rebuilt or repaired in keeping with their original architecture. Unfortunately, some buildings are left in their damaged state as a reminder of the tragic event.
Kelly Hazel I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I've loved drawing ever since I could hold anything that would make a mark. In high school, I attended the Fine Arts Center, a magnet school for the Arts. This is where I discovered photography for the first time. I also got to try my hand with sculpture and 3-D design....no talent in that 3rd dimension for me, but I earned a deep respect and appreciation for the artists brave enough to venture into it. I also attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University during my senior year in high school. This school has grown since then into a year round boarding school that focuses on the Arts. It is truly an amazing program and I count myself blessed to...
