Description
This photograph was taken at an overlook off the coast of Terceira Island of the Azores. There is a small red topped lighthouse atop the cliffs across the small bay area. I tried to get to the lighthouse, but I kept getting lost, the streets are very narrow and the landscape is very hilly and steep.
If the far background, you can see another small "islet" sometimes known as "Split Rock." It is actually two large rocks that used to form the rim of another volcanic caudaria. Terceira is a volcanic island, and you can see the evidence of that in the black lava stone lining the shores.
The Azores sit in the Atlantic Ocean about 900 miles off the coast of Portugal, and they are an independent republic of Portugal. The waters surrounding them are a beautiful sapphire blue, and are quite clear when they are still, but still waters do not happen often here.
