Description
Igreja da Miscericordia or The Church of the Misericordia stands at the port entrance to Angra do Heroismo on Terceira Island in the Azores of Portugal.
The church is the most modern church on the entire island. The first foundation stone was laid by Bishop Don annual Alvers da Costa in 1728, and it was complete and blessed by the vicar-general Manuel dos Santos Rolim in 1746.
The churches of Terceira all feature beautifully simplistic exteriors, with incredibly ornate interiors. Additional photographs within this collection will feature the interior of this church.
In front of the church, you can see the "Gates to the City" which were meant to welcome visitors from the port and harbor. The Island of Terceira was discovered in the late 1400's and Angra do Heroismo was the first city established there. Today, Angra do Heroismo is the largest city on Terceira.
There was not a lot of color in this photograph to begin with, as it was taken on a rather dreary, cloudy day. I like the color photograph, even with all the grayness of the image because it accentuates the blue highlights on the church, but I love the black and white image just as much because it calls attention to the overall composition of the entrance created by the architectural details of several different objects: The stairs, the gateways, the fountain, and the church, framed by two streets on either side, all come together beautifully to welcome visitors to the island.
