Description
This photograph looks out from a small terrace in Angra Park, over the city of Angra do Heroismo, on to Monte Brasil.
Angra Garden is a steep green space in the center of Angra do Heroismo. Several brick paths climb up the steep hill behind the Angra Garden Hotel, winding through hundreds of different plants and trees from around the world. There are also historic sculptures and mosaics scattered along the way. At the very top, you will find a huge monumental spire, and you can look out for miles in almost every direction. This is not the very top, but a small grassy terrace about half way up. From here, you can see Monte Brasil, the mountainous peninsula that creates Angra Bay, where the Angra Port is located. You can also see many of the historic buildings in Angra do Heroismo.
The large yellow trimmed building is the Palace of the Capitaes-Generais. It has a long history, that I find a little complicated, but very interesting. Though originally established as a college by the Jesuits of Angra, it has served many roles over the past 4 centuries. It was the seat of the first Unified Government of the Azores (The Azores are 9 islands, and are an independent republic of Portugal), It has also served as The Royal Palace of Pedro the IV (of Portugal) and of Carlos the I (of Portugal), the seat of the Military Government of the Azores, Seat of the Presidency of the Azores, and as a Governmental Meeting Place. Today, it still serves as a headquarters for the regional government.
You can read more about it here https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palácio_dos_Capitães-Generais_(Angra_do_Hero%C3%ADsmo). It truly is fascinating.
You can also see the enormous Se Cathedral. Se Cathedral is said to be the largest Cathedral in the Azores Region, and while I am not sure about that, I do know that it is the largest on Terceira Island. Construction on Se Cathedral began in 1570, and took 42 years to complete. The cathedral is constructed over the ruins of the gothic church of the Holy Savior. It was badly damaged in the 1980 earthquake, but it has been fully restored.
The city of Angra do Heroismo is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage City, and much of the original architecture and streets are preserved. It is truly a beautiful city to explore and stay in.
