Description
Terceira Island is the 3rd largest of 9 islands that make up The Azores region of Portugal. The islands are made up of volcanic formations along what is called the Terceira Rift in the Atlantic Ocean. Terceira is made up of four overlapping Stratovolcanos. The black rocky coast is created from ancient volcanic activity.
The active volcanic systems at Terceira Island include the central volcanoes of Santa Barbara and Pico Alto and a basaltic ridge that crosses the island. Although the volcanos are still active, only one volcanic eruption has taken place on land during the time Terceira has been inhabited. That was in 1761.
Submarine eruptive activity occurred in 1867 and more recently in 1998 to 2001 along the Serreta Submarine Ridge. That is closer to where this photograph was created.
In this photograph, you can also see the plankton in the water. The bright turquoise color is plankton, and it is a stark contrast to the otherwise deep, sapphire blue water. In this image, it is broken up along the coast by the harsh tide and rocky shore, but sometimes it can be seen in large splotches with definite and clear edges. I think it is very pretty and neat to see.
